Song of the Conquerors is a futuristic, politically minded novella by author Raanan Geberer. In the war-torn climate of the not too distant future, the United Nations has all but lost control of various warring cultures, and the only way to manage their violence is to permit it at selected times in indoor locations. These super-gangs breed fierce warriors who are prepared to die in their leader’s quest for power, and our story centers around three young people who do just that: Josh, Bucharest Joe, and Hira Tamashiro. This eclectic mix of cultures and ideologies lose their lives at the famed battle of Sarajevo, only to find themselves reincarnated forty years after their bloody demise. From here the warriors must find each other again, and reenact the mission that they were returned to Earth to complete.
Fans of political science fiction are sure to love Raanan Geberer’s completely original story. I was fascinated by the lore and history that Geberer has created for this chilling and violent vision of the future. I think readers looking for something new will have their minds blown by many of the book’s excellent concepts. For me personally, Song of the Conquerors could have done with being a bit longer so as to give the audience more attachment to the main trio of heroes. I was so fascinated by their attitudes and cultures that the novella seemed to end all too soon. Overall though, I’d definitely recommend this intriguing read to fans of metaphysical ideas, politics, and philosophy.
