NICOLE BEA wears many hats in the writing community, from the editor-in-chief of an online literary magazine to acquisition editor with a small press. She has written several novels for middle grade through to adult audiences, and her poems and stories have appeared or are forthcoming in a variety of publications. During the day, Nicole works as a technical writer and by night she focuses on 'deep stories to dig into': pieces that include romance, honesty, hope, and self-discovery. It felt as though everyone in Naiomi’s life always left. First, her mother drowned, then her best friend, Keane, moved away after ninth grade. She was in love with him, and when he left, he took a part of her heart. With her elder brother being protective of her, she lived a lonely life, developed anxiety, and took to running. Years later, Keane returned for a short period, while Naiomi was planning to leave for college. Their worlds collided again with Naiomi’s anxiety reaching its peak. Will she be courageous enough to tell Keane how she feels? Does Keane feel the same way? Why is Erik, her older brother, obsessively protective of her? So many questions, but Somewhere Only We Know by Nicole Bea holds the answers.
Somewhere Only We Know is a beautiful teen romance novel that revolves around Keane, Naiomi, and their families. It was quite an emotional read for me because I saw teenagers who went from being unsure to having clarity so that they made lifetime sacrifices. I saw parents/guardians who put their desires aside to propel their youngling forward. Nicole Bea developed the protagonists’ characters so well that I felt like I watched them grow. The plot was slow, progressive, and steady, just like life in the coastal areas. I experienced nostalgia because I grew up close to the beach. Creating that Erik twist was a genius move that made me do a double-take! I loved the writing style because it was relaxed and simple, but with depth. Bea has written a brilliant book and we deserve more of her works!
