Martin Tiongson relocated from the Philippines to the USA. His business guidebook, Something to Be Proud Of, tells the story of 14 years of his life. During that period, 2011 to 2024, he operated and owned three small businesses. The reader gets a first-hand look at what it’s like to run a gelato store, a bagel shop, and a French bakery. He even managed to continue to operate one of his businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, obviously with some significant changes. He learnt as he went, and then wrote this book to pass on his wisdom to others. This book teaches business management, accounting, human resources, and customer satisfaction skills.

Martin Tiongson tells it as it is, warts and all. I particularly enjoyed how frank he was about everything business-related. He refers to himself as insincere; that’s his survival tactic. He also says things that are the opposite of what we’ve heard before. For example, the customer isn’t always right. His problem-solving skills help him to manage staff, negotiate with suppliers, and thrive during a pandemic. Watching him grow and improve with each business venture is an inspiration. I’m sure many entrepreneurs and new small business operators will resonate with his story. I was inspired by every stage of his business ownership, and I plan to adopt some of his processes in my own shop. It’s a light, easy read, and he doesn’t get into too much technical business jargon. Something to Be Proud Of will suit anyone who wants to buy or improve their small business.
