“Everyone and everything has a life cycle, which means they have a beginning and an end.” Just like flowers and butterflies. I love the opening paragraph of this book, Someone I Love Has Died. It explains the death of a loved one in easy-to-understand terms for children and their parents. How do you deal with the many emotions going through your head? Lots and lots of questions like why did he/she die, where did they go, or will I see them again? Authors Catherine and Jenny Stephenson help children acknowledge and recognize their questions and respect their feelings. They explore some of the emotions children (and adults) might experience after someone passes away and then offer suggestions to help recognize and heal them. Symptoms of grief can be very different from one person to another.

Someone I Love Has Died: A Grief Activities Book For Children by Catherine and Jenny Stephenson helps children understand their feelings and offers ways of remembering their deceased loved one. Illustrator Hiruni Kariyawasam brings the concepts to life with her watercolor and digitized artwork. Telling stories and sharing photos are two ways of keeping their memory alive. Would a child benefit from a happy board? Whenever a child is feeling sad, they can glance at the board filled with photos and drawings that make them happy. Even adults would benefit from the many suggestions offered. Jenny Stephenson is a psychologist who deals with children, behavioral therapy, and sleep difficulties. I would recommend this book as a gift to someone who has recently experienced loss. Libraries and schools would also benefit from the compassion and suggestions included in this book
