The title Smile Big, Dream Bigger is very accurate, catchy, and will inspire people to open the book. Author Andrea Scott writes about a young girl named Samantha and her dreams for a better community for all. She truly believes that a smile is contagious and we should pass it around. Although her mom works hard to provide for her and her siblings, her mom still smiles and lets them know that things will be all right. Samantha reminds us that being friendly can boost the spirits of everyone around. Samantha is fortunate to come from a loving family and have a strong, wonderful mother who sets a good example. If Samantha smiles at one person, and that person passes it on, and then that person passes it on… Samantha is appreciative of her teachers and school—she recognizes how crucial schooling is if you want a happy environment. She also realizes the imperative of setting goals and taking the right steps to achieve them. An important reminder for all of us.
Smile Big, Dream Bigger is a motivational book that should inspire communities that children need to feel safe in a violence-free neighborhood. After reading a book about Martin Luther King, Samantha vows to become a leader in her community, which serves as a reminder to us all that we all need to help create the neighborhood we want to live in. She has a dream that her classroom will be filled with books and that children will be excited about learning. Illustrator Davion Coleman provides simple, but effective illustrations of Samantha and her family.
