Skinny, Livin’ The Dream: Journey to a Second Chance in Life, written by M.E. Najar, is an inspirational and encouraging read for anyone who is hoping to improve their health and may need a little extra push or encouragement. Mary and Hector began a life-changing journey a few years ago and that has completely transformed their entire lives. Mary has written this book to share their story and to help others try to commit to this lifestyle change. Struggling with her weight and various dieting techniques since she was in the ninth grade, Mary never really thought about and looked at what she was putting into her body. This changed with health issues and being told that she was really hurting her body by her diet; this has not only made a world of difference for her but for Hector as well. Hector shares his own thoughts here and offers the story from his perspective, which is just as encouraging as Mary’s story. Also included is this couple’s typical grocery list, a sample menu, recipes, and steps to follow in order to make this lifestyle change in your own life.
My favorite quote in M.E. Najar’s Skinny, Livin’ The Dream: Journey to a Second Chance in Life is found on page 58: “Take it one moment at a time. Each moment making a better choice is a victory. Soon, that moment will become a week, then a month, and before you realize it, it has been a year with mostly successes and few regrets.” This is such an important part of making a lifestyle change as it can be overwhelming, intimidating, and easy to be discouraged if you get off track. Mary encourages the reader to just focus on the moment and making a good choice in that moment. I have really enjoyed this book and will go back to it frequently, not only to pull out recipes to try, but also just to reread sections to help encourage me to be wiser in the choices I make; and to also remember that I am not alone in coping with health issues. I find this book to be such an encouragement and an excellent resource. I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone who would like to begin a lifestyle change or who needs that extra encouragement to stay on track, or for those who must make changes due to health struggles.
