In Skinny Little Tree by Jayme Martin, children get to learn all about one special skinny tree and its whole world. Children learn about worms in the ground, birds in the tree-tops, falling leaves, and dancing under the full moon.
While Skinny Little Tree is a very simple story and concept, I thought it was delightfully fun, especially for a young child. The drawings are minimal and focus on the titular subject: a Skinny Tree. The tree itself looks rather comical and sweet as it dances awkwardly on its twig-like frame. I think children will really enjoy the originality of the tree, and question why it looks so different from the trees they see outside. The written pages are interspersed with pages where children can be creative and draw their own interpretation of what is happening in the story. This kind of interactivity is awesome in children's books, especially when they are competing with game systems to keep children interactive.
This is the kind of book that kids remember when they are adults. They probably find it while digging through the attic or basement, and end up looking back fondly at their own creations when they were children and having fun bursts of nostalgia. Jayme Martin does a wonderful job creating a cute and simple children's book that will really engage both young children and their parents. Skinny Little Tree is a simple, yet friendly story about the seasons, without detracting from the simplicity of the story itself.
