#SingleSassySexAgenarian by Regina A. Byrom is a light-hearted and humorous depiction of the life of a sexagenarian, someone who is between the ages of 60 and 69. Here Byrom gives her take on everyday experiences, including social distancing and online gatherings amidst Covid-19, dating, her grandchildren, visiting the doctor, and more. My favorite story in the book was Eye can see Clearly, where Byrom wrote a poem to read publicly at her friend’s surprise celebration party, but just before presenting, her glasses broke. This simple incident that can happen to anyone turns into a very comical situation through Byrom’s quirky commentary yet calm demeanor. Life is an adventure, and Byrom makes it so by laughing with herself and those around her.
#SingleSassySexAgenarian by Regina A. Byrom is light-hearted, concise, candid, and creative, bringing humor to everyday activities. Byrom is a fascinating, audacious, and charming individual, and this comes through in all her stories. She makes getting older sound fun, and I think it should be. Byrom paints a new picture of aging. Contrary to the media’s depiction of sick, helpless aging people knocking on death’s door, Byrom dares to live her life fully with the same ambition and vigor of a 20-something, only wiser and sassier. Her stories prove that you’re only as old as you feel. You can be old, but the fun doesn’t need to end. The critical message in reading this book is not to take yourself and life seriously, to laugh often, especially at yourself, and never be limited by societal expectations.
