The setting is the 1950s. The story begins with Garrett describing his family. His father was a shoe salesman and his mother is a stay-at-home housewife. Life seemed mundane. Garrett was a teenage social misfit. He made friends with the Tamworts, a new family in town. The boys had always been home-schooled but the family decided it was time they went to public school. The boys were intelligent but have few social graces. They were constantly getting in trouble. As the friendship grows Garrett questions things he had always accepted previously.
Like most of the over 50 crowd, I look back at the 50s as a time of innocence, peace and tranquility. While the technology was simpler the people faced many of the same issues we face today. Just as there are those who question their religion, their family relationships and their future, youth questioned the same thing in the 50s.
Gary Turcotte reminds us that the picture may change but the underlining issues do not. I enjoy Turcotte’s work. This is the first book he penned. I find it one of his best. There is a depth to the characters and the plot that draw in the reader.
