Shy Anger by Kelsey Ray Banerjee is a compilation of the author's original poetry described as “A Poetry Collection In Three Parts”. The three parts are distinct but certainly intersect with themes that weave in and out of all parts; intentionally uncomfortable and profoundly honest. The first part, Logos, pulls the curtain back slightly with pieces such as Trust, where a lover seeks out a means to fill an emotional void with answers that come from tarot cards in the absence of the partner who created the void within her. The second, Pathos, evokes what the part promises with poems like Relapse, an ode to the fight between the psychological and physical impact of addiction. The third, Ethos, extends out into hopeful strength with pieces such as Paths, where Banerjee describes the fallacy of a linear passage to those who are open to seeing it.
Shy Anger is a fantastic compilation of thought-provoking work that I set down and walked away from when I'd read the last one, only to circle back and read many of them over again. Kelsey Ray Banerjee has the gifts of wit and vision and the ability to merge them together in the pages of her work. Analogies and metaphors are the cornerstones of each of Banerjee's full selection with lines that sing straight from their stanzas. My favorite is The Story, wherein a person is studying the life cycle of a tree but contemplates her own, briefly, with the vivid description given: “...cold in her car, she lights cigarettes in place of incense...” All of the work is powerful and empowering, and also infuriating and tender in equal parts. This is a wonderful collection and I hope to have many more land in my lap.
