Shimmer, Songs of Night written by Raven Howell and illustrated by Carina Povarchik is a masterful selection of poems and illustrations that dive into the imaginary world of children. The ordinary questions, reasonings, or fears a child might have are brought up in full, lively illustrations and carefully worded poems.
I have to say that rarely have I ever read a book like this. It is a wonder. Let me say it again: a wonder. And it’s as if the poems and the illustrations are so intertwined that they have to be together. You cannot separate them, and if you did, you might feel like something was missing. The vast imagination of the poems coupled with the colorful child-appealing, detailed drawings take you into another world—the world of a child. It’s the sort of book that allows adults to step back and revisit the imaginations of their childhood, if for only a few moments. To temporarily step back in time to when they were young.
With so many negative things in the world today, it is refreshing to dive into a book such as this. The messages are so positive that they ask to be read over and over again. And each poem, reflecting on a different topic, can stand alone as wonderful discussions between parents and children. The author, Raven Howell, is an award winner, and it’s obvious to see why from reading this book. I highly recommend Shimmer, Songs of Night for children of all ages, and for everyone who is young at heart.
