Shell Shocked by Kathleen Welton will appeal to young adult fans of mysteries, adventure, and coming-of-age stories. Alex looks forward to a new challenge on her sixteenth birthday. She starts her internship at the Myrtle Turtle Rescue Center. Alex loves these beautiful sea creatures and dreams of dedicating her life to their protection. Cataluna Island, where Alex lives with her family, shelters sea turtles and wild horses. They attract tourists, but not all are responsible and careful. Many turtles get injured because of human activities. Maya, Alex's supervisor and an experienced biologist, shows her a turtle with strange markings on its shell. Alex and her friend, Avery, decide to investigate the mystery and help the turtles.

Kathleen Welton's Shell Shocked is a beautifully written, captivating tale that will motivate young adult readers to follow their hearts and make the right choices. The author uses rich, descriptive language to engage our imaginations and let us see these animals from a different angle. The unwavering friendship between Alex and Avery sets an example. Alex can always rely on Avery, knowing that he shares her fears and concerns. Alex finds a great mentor in the wise and supportive Maya. Welton skillfully portrays the unique relationships among these dedicated and passionate wildlife defenders. The book offers valuable information on environmental issues and how to resolve them. The plot has an enthralling twist and psychological depth. I highly recommend this beautifully illustrated book to all caring nature lovers.
