In She Sees Ghosts by David Fitz-Gerald, Mehitable Munch is living happily with her close-knit family in Vermont, 1799. She had always been told she has a special gift, and sometimes she can see the ghostly figures around her, but she does not quite know what to do about it. Her life changes on January 1, 1800, when her house burns down and all of her family are killed. She goes to live in the barn owned by her best friend’s parents and begins to see ghosts more clearly after that. She is especially tortured by the menacing ghostly figure of her family’s murderer, who appears nightly to taunt her and wish her harm. As Mehitable grows older, she struggles to deal with her tormentor and the other ghosts who surround her. She eventually travels with her newly married best friend to the Adirondacks to start settling a town and begin a new life.
She Sees Ghosts is an intriguing paranormal historical tale that will sweep you away with ghosts, history, and legends. The book is well researched and explores the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the settling of the Adirondacks, among other events in history. I liked the author’s use of the ghosts to discuss wars and events that had already passed in Mehitable’s time. Mehitable’s unusual character shines throughout as she insists on living in barns and learns to speak with the ghosts. We even meet Ethan Allen himself. Aspects of the spiritual world and the afterlife are well explored. David Fitz-Gerald does not hold back on the common tragedies of the time, and we often see characters in life and then in death. The “paranormal” part of this historical novel definitely comes first, as the spiritual world is heavily involved in every aspect of it. She Sees Ghosts is not your typical historical novel, and Mehitable is not your typical heroine as she often makes choices that will astound you. However, this book will captivate readers with its descriptions of war, the beauty of the Adirondacks, and the lifestyle of that era. Fans of paranormal and historical fiction should check out this third book in the Adirondack Spirit Series.
