Shardheld is an epic fantasy quest tale by Paul E. Horsman. It is the third book in The Shardheld Saga and concludes the story of the Runemaster Muus Terrell and the companions he has acquired on his quest as the Shardheld. Every five hundred years a mortal finds a piece of the sky that has fallen down from heaven. This shard holds all the magic of both gods and men and must be returned to a standing stone in Fulrum or magic will disappear from the world. There are powerful, cruel beings called the older gods who don't want the shard to be placed on the stone. They want to use it to restore their own vicious reign. This makes for a perilous, action filled adventure for whoever finds the shard.

Shardheld is well organized and though there are a lot of characters we can follow them and catch the essence of their personalities easily. What Paul E. Horsman really excels at in Shardheld and The Shardheld Saga is world building. He has created a world with hints of the glory that was Rome, the proud warrior culture of the Vikings, and the mysticism of the Druids of old Britain. The hero passes through one interesting culture after another, accumulating friends as he goes and we get a clear picture of the world he is so desperately trying to save. The heroes are young and make plenty of mistakes, but they push on in their quest. This is the essence of a good fantasy tale.
