A series of five heinous murders have occurred in the small town of Grabenberg, New Jersey. And next to each mutilated body has been found a note that more or less states "We are not evil. We are good. We are of the True Light. We search to destroy evil . . ." The latest body, that of a young woman, found in a cornfield, has been shot in the heart with liquid silver. Al, or Alfred Moore, the leader of the northeastern branch of the Occult and Paranormal Investigation Agency, which works with the CIA, FBI, Scotland Yard, and Interpol, calls in top OPIA
agent Kirsa Heinrich who has been living in Germany for the past few years. Kirsa's parents had both been killed when their home in Grabenberg was destroyed in a bomb blast. A reluctant Kirsa returns to the United States and to Grabenberg, New Jersey, knowing that she must fight against the Church of Light which had condemned vampires and other paranormal groups. And someone close to Kirsa is a traitor to OPIA. Handsome vampire Ayden O'Brien is to be Kirsa's Shadow guard, but will he be able to protect her?
"Shadows of the Past" is a well-written and totally engrossing story about paranormal creatures including vampires, ware-animals, and humans like Kirsa who associate with them and fight off a cult that refuses to accept them. Paragraphs separating one action from the next could be indicated with more spacing between, but that's little to complain about in this engrossing story so similar to "Twilight". In "Shadows of the Past" vampires and humans like Kirsa, who are turning into vampires, drink their required blood or blood substitute along with glasses of wine at night or orange juice in the morning. They wear sunglasses and pull up their hoodies in strong sunlight and fall in love like regular humans. Author E.A. Jensen has created a delightful read in "Shadows of the Past" that even those who generally don't read vampire stories will love.
