"Shadowman" by Aaron Dennis begins in New Orleans when a young man, who has been partying with his friend, goes out into the street to get some more alcohol. He witnesses a killing in an alleyway, and his entire world changes in that moment. When he wakes, his body is covered with bandages that show evidence of injuries, and an elderly woman is nursing him back to health. She explains to him that the victim he saw was her grandson who was a shadowman. When he died, he passed his power into the young man, who now must seek his own answers to survive.
I was blown away by this book. I ended up reading just a little bit at a time to spread out the experience. The author acknowledges the admiration he has for Carlos Castenada, and his work shows much of the depth and profundity of that author's work, while retaining freshness and originality. The journey Adja undertakes is momentous, and the beings he meets along the way, both his allies and those who seek to destroy him, are compelling and real. I really enjoyed the rituals and ceremonies performed by Adja in "Shadowman". Dennis is never overly descriptive or wordy, and gently nudges his reader into the reality of each scene. This little book is deceptively small. But though there are not that many pages in the text, the world the reader discovers himself in is very large indeed.
