The Academy is a work of fiction in the fantasy and adventure genres and serves as the second installment in the Shadow Seekers series. It is aimed at young adult readers and was penned by Korey L. Ward. The book continues the journeys of Nelson, Angel, and Alex, having graduated from the Shadow Seeker Academy. They are now in their regular high school full time. It’s a shame their fellow students and staff members aren’t treating them any kinder since they saved the school, but more important is the looming threat of Mr. Blackmore, who seeks to threaten the whole world unless the three friends can find a way to stop him.
This book is an excellent rollercoaster that continues the coming of age tale of its heroes and manages to find unexpected twist after twist to keep the pace of the drama intense, and the plot propelled forward at all times. It’s a tricky thing to follow a story like The First Seeker, which established a complex world with dynamic characters, but Korey L. Ward has shown an enormous talent for expanding and deepening the lore of this world without succumbing to dense overcomplication. Character growth feels organic and consistent, and the Shadow Seekers world is fertile ground for them to keep growing in. I’m excited by the development the series has shown in The Academy and hope to see further installments in the not too distant future, whether they be following the same heroes or exploring some other corner of the Shadow Seekers world. This is an excellent read for young adult fans of fantasy, and I recommend it highly.
