Serf and Turf by Marc Jedel is the third book in the Silicon Valley Mystery series. Another death gives Marty an opportunity to work once again with Sergeant Mace who, at this point, has made Marty his official secret partner. The death of a coach directly shakes Marty’s world up when he learns that his girlfriend has a connection to the victim through their joint love of RenFaires. Marty dives into the mystery to search for clues and uncover any secrets the coach may have kept, which pulls him into the world of soccer moms and Renaissance Faire attendees. Through a gossip-filled world and a variety of suspects around every corner, Marty follows the clues to a surprising killer.
The mystery has a zany and fun tone which Marc Jedel incorporates throughout in the same style as the previous two mysteries in the series. Marty returns with his usual quirks and humor which drives the tone of the mystery and keeps the story lighthearted. Marty is a laidback character that has an interest in helping solve murders and a wholesome dedication to be the best uncle he can be. The story kicks off immediately with the death of Coach Quince, never slowing down on the action and the sleuthing until the mystery is solved. Marty also shares some sweet moments with his children that are away at college as they communicate, which shows his softer parental side while several of his more pertinent scenes are with him as an uncle. The mystery is delightful and combines the elements of soccer and Renaissance Faires which play together in an interesting way to make the story charming and eccentric. Serf and Turf is a delightful mystery that’s clever and provides Marty with another opportunity to solve a murder, leading to humorous results.
