Seeking Incandescence by Kristen Flood presents a dystopian world controlled by the Seer, where children are programmed and trained to become tools used by the government. Pepper's words at the beginning communicate a tragic sentiment that animates the conflict in the story: “Because we are different. We are born into a world that doesn't want us and you want to be part of it.” The narrator describes this world in the following words: “The law forbids children to know their parents because we are all supposed to be children of our Parent Country. A typical child is bred and sent to an Academy. They are groomed to be mindless creatures, the perfect picture of obedience. In the real world there are no mothers and fathers, only daughters and sons of the country.” This is the context within which the heroes of this novel come into existence.
The characters are fascinating, born into a harsh and merciless world. Inno is born illegally and she has a mission to fulfill — infiltrate the Ares Academy and destroy the government. Pepper should have been dead by now, but the schemes designed to end her life didn’t work. She is immune and good only for one thing — to become a spy. The only problem is that she is unpredictable, hard to manipulate. And there is Mint, born to be the perfect soldier, the ideal image of the Academy, but can things really work according to plan?
Kristen Flood has imagined a compelling story with great characters to fit into it, a story that will appeal to fans of dystopia. The writing leaps off the pages gracefully. The conflict is well-developed and readers fall for the characters from the very beginning of the story. Seeking Incandescence is fast-paced, it’s furious and exciting. Great dystopian setting and concept. One of those books with a huge potential to excite and entertain readers.
