Seeker by Suzana Thompson is a darkly gripping YA paranormal novel. This mysterious and intriguing story begins with Mila as she is with her mom and dad at the elephant exhibit in the zoo when she is just five years old. She sees a man who watches and frightens the other children that are there, and he is looking at Mila as well, but she isn't afraid. She watches back. He comes across as cold and secretive, and this intrigues the little girl. Then one by one we have short scenes of each child that is watched by the stranger. Things begin to turn paranormal when the stranger touches Mila's light-colored hair and a black patch resembling a dye suddenly appears. That night when she tells her mother about being able to walk through the stranger, her mother dismisses it.
Thompson cleverly begins her novel with a mystery that gradually unfolds a little at a time, not giving it all to you at once, which I really like. She keeps the actions of the characters moving along and the plot at a steady pace. It's obvious this author knows how to build a good plot, and it is irresistible in the way that it plays out. It may sound cliched, but this would make a great movie. It's unique and blends mystery, the paranormal, and suspense in just the right amounts. The book as a whole puts a fresh face on classic paranormal. There are enough surprises to keep you on your toes, and you'll find yourself thoroughly entertained. The first-person POV was a wise choice by the author, as it personalizes the story and draws the reader in intimately. I also like the way we see Mila grow from childhood to adolescence. Even though this is a longish book, the even pacing and natural dialogue give it a quick-read flow, and you are so immersed that you're at the end before you know it. Stephen King fans, especially of his children-in-jeopardy stories, will love Seeker by Suzana Thompson.
