In Secrets of Mound Gardening: Harnessing Nature for Healthier Fruits, Veggies, and Environment by Darryl Whitham, we find that “Gardening adds years to your life, and life to your years.” A mound garden is a series of small, easily managed, and cared-for plots. It’s different from other gardening methods because even the most inexperienced nature lover can produce healthy fruit and vegetables without the rigorous labor of a typical garden and harmful chemicals. Building organic soil eliminates the usage of fertilizer, and proper mulching helps to reduce weeding. The six main types of garden mounds are Native American Mounds, Keyhole Mounds, Survival Mounds, Raised Bed Mounds, Compost or Midden Mounds, and Hügelkultur Mounds. Each one serves a purpose and can be used according to one’s needs.
It was reassuring to read that a basic gardener like myself can produce crops using the detailed step-by-step guide that Darryl Whitham has provided from his own experiences. These ancient methods are really simple and cost-effective and are still the main types of gardening used in countries around the world. I found the unique way to keep water and moisture in your mound garden rather interesting, as well as the Two Minute Soil Mound. The sketches of each type of mound were appropriate aids for the accompanying information. Garden lovers will be able to learn new techniques and find useful tips. Reap and Repeat, Rotate and Rebuild is good advice and is also one of the chapters in Darryl Whitham’s Secrets of Mound Gardening.
