The Scouts are part of an educational movement that teaches children values, confidence, and responsibility. During their projects, children acquire better social skills and an interest in helping others. Scout Salute: Join Tommy on His First Camping Adventure (Kid's First Experiences) is an introduction to their activities. The main character is Tommy, a boy who is part of the local Scout group about to attend his first camp. He begins his preparation by checking that his uniform is complete and listing his camping essentials. While he is with his group he reviews the Scout Law. Samina Parkar outlines the basic principles of a Scout group and camping activities so that children can become familiar with them.
Being a Scout is a wonderful experience that every boy should have. One incident I enjoyed in Scout Salute was when Tommy had to set up his tent, which at first seemed impossible. That lesson was significant to me because Scout activities teach children to tackle new situations and gradually become accustomed to any challenge until they finally see it as fun. They will learn to feel proud in overcoming new hurdles and be motivated to learn many new skills. Experienced Scouts are more independent in their daily activities because they have discovered their ability to use their talents on their own. Samina Parkar uses a concise narrative style accompanied by colorful pictures. The book shows how much fun it can be to go camping and share time in nature.
