The social structure of the planet Darracia is beginning to change, but not everyone agrees. In Schism: The Battle for Darracia by Michael Phillip Cash, the half-breed crown prince, V’sair, wants to be more like the warriors of the planet and be seen as strong. His father, King Drakko, wants V’sair to learn from his old teacher so that he can bring wisdom to his rule, along with the empathy he has received from his Planta mother. V’sair struggles with following his father’s wishes while feeling less capable than the other Darracian men, and wants to obtain his Fireblade to prove his manhood and ensure respect.
In the meantime, the Quyroo, the oppressed race of beings who live on the planet’s surface, are struggling to be seen as more than sub-human beings by the Darracian population. With the help of Queen Reminda and her influence on Drakko, a shift in attitude is beginning to bring about positive changes. Reminda also feels that her servant girl, the granddaughter of the Quyroo priestess, is a love match for V’sair and sends her on a mission with him so they can spend time together. Unfortunately, trouble follows them and leaves the palace vulnerable to attack. The forces for change are confronted by those who want to keep things the way they always were and the fight between the king and his power-hungry brother will determine the course of history, unless V’sair can claim command.
Exciting action and unique and compelling characters keep you turning the pages of Schism: The Battle for Darracia by Michael Phillip Cash. In spite of editing oversights, the writing is clear and smooth and the plot moves along quickly so you want to see what happens next. There is plenty of emotion and soul searching for the young prince so that you can really feel what he struggles with. The story is very interesting and fun to read with unique characters and a solid premise. This is a great beginning to a series that will really be a gripping read for fans of the genre.
