Scandalous Endeavors by Amanda Mariel is the story of Amelia, a woman of 19 who loses her father after several weeks of illness. Amelia's uncle arrived in England after learning that her father was sick. After the funeral he decides that Amelia will return with him to America until she is 21. Amelia has other ideas; she doesn't want to leave England and will do anything to stay, including marrying a man she doesn't love. With two failures of her plan and strange feelings for another man that she doesn't consider suitable material, Amelia feels that all hope is lost and that she will be forced to go to America and only return to England after her 21st birthday. Her plans change again when she learns that the man she thought didn't love her loves her just as much as she loves him. But will they stay in England or will she be forced to move to Scotland?
Scandalous Endeavors by Amanda Mariel is well written with good imagery that places you right there with Amelia as she goes through the ups and downs of losing her father, and potentially losing everything she knows for the next two years until she reaches her majority and can take care of herself. Her emotions are real as she wars with her conflicting feelings about being in mourning and falling in love. Scandalous Endeavors isn't unique and follows your typical romance plot, but the story is more believable than most romances. Scandalous Endeavors feels like Amanda Mariel took a woman's journal from that time period and added details and changed the point of view to get the story she has, and to me that makes the story one of a kind.
