Saving Hogmand: Tales From the MIA by Aleksandra Chumak is a YA fantasy story. Clara and Sasha have been desperate for an adventure for as long as they can remember, but they are about to learn that, sometimes, what you wish for isn’t always what you really want. Beneath Sasha’s house, a magical tunnel has appeared, and when the girls enter it, they find Hogmand, a magical, enchanted land. However, it appears to be under the control of something evil, and the girls must battle bloodthirsty unicorns, ghosts, and a witch, not to mention two evil girls who look just like them. The Hogmand natives join the girls on their quest to free the land, but can they break the evil witch’s grip, or will one of their own betray them?
Saving Hogmand by Aleksandra Chumak is a wonderful YA story, full of action and written in an intriguing, captivating manner that makes you want to keep reading. It provides all the ingredients needed for a YA adventure – plenty of mystery, battles with quirky creatures, and lots of humor, too. The characters are exceptional, developed into people – or creatures – you can believe in, and you’ll root for the good guys all the way through. This is a page-turner, a book you won’t put down until you’ve reached the end, and it will leave you wanting to read the next one in the series straight away. This is a great first book in a new series, and I hope the rest follow suit as this looks like a series to follow.
