Saving Annie: Book One -The Fall by Steve Jackson is the first part of a true crime story. Rhonda Casto lost her life in 2009 after falling 300 feet from a cliff. There were no witnesses except for her partner, Stephen Nichols, father of Annie, their 9-month-old daughter. He told police she was high on drugs and slipped. Something doesn’t add up though. What Nichols tells the police doesn’t match with what they find when rescuers reach her body and retrieve it. It does match with the million-dollar life insurance policy he took out on her life just a few months earlier. As other witnesses to other events, including alleged unwanted sexual attention by Nichols, start to come forward, the case on Rhonda starts to go cold.
Saving Annie: Book One – The Fall by Steve Jackson is a riveting read. It is written in a concise, straightforward manner, in chronological order and with plenty of references to events and documentation surrounding the incident. Steve Jackson has done a great job here of presenting the cold hard facts, including police interviews, witness testimony to other events and transcripts from phone calls. Obviously, this is part of a series and there are three other books to come so expect this to end very suddenly. My only disappointment was that I didn’t have the other books lined up to continue reading because it ended so suddenly. If you like true crime you will love this book. There is no bias from the author; just the facts written in an engaging way with plenty of background about the main characters – Rhonda, her family, and Nichols himself. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
