San Francisco is a collection of 11 short stories by Terence Clarke. "Eugene Li and The Queen of England" follows a Chinese American police officer as he is searching for the kidnapped granddaughter of an Irishman in Chinatown. In "The Only Playboy," two lead actors in a stage play develop feelings for each other, only for things to change when one lands a role in the latest George Clooney movie. Grieving the loss of his father, a young man finds a kindred spirit in his partner while tango dancing in "Secretos." "Stow Lake" follows a badly wounded Vietnam vet who discovers he has much in common with a UN translator who used to fight for the other side. A model Piper Cub airplane brings back past memories during an argument between a mother and her daughter in "Bobby's Piper Cub."
Thematically rich and emotionally resonant, San Francisco is an enthralling collection of slice-of-life stories you will find hard to put down. Author Terence Clarke draws from the plethora of varied aspects of life and tells some fascinating stories that stay in your mind long after you've finished reading the book. The characters are grounded and believable. They feel like real people you've met before in your everyday life. This is the very aspect that makes the tales relatable and compelling to read. Although I enjoyed them all, "The Only Playboy" was my personal favorite of the bunch. If you like to read short stories inspired by life, I suggest San Francisco.
