Ruth Finnegan gives us an “intellectual account” of her stunningly varied and impressive career in her publication Ruth Finnegan Anthropologist. The reader is immediately taken aback by the sheer depth and breadth of her published works, ranging from academic discourses on oral literature in Africa to works of creative fiction such as her recent novel Black Inked Pearl, A Girl’s Quest. To express that Finnegan has experienced ‘a life well lived’ to date is an understatement. Anyone who reads this book will be automatically driven to check if one person could achieve so much in so many areas of enquiry. I did, and found that not only is this true, but that the reader will also find an engaging and vibrant person with a true lust for the creative arts and learning.
Ruth Finnegan describes in lesser detail her personal accomplishments, but in a way that gives added meaning to her professional works. She also presents a series of photos that show us both the young student and the mature academic in a way that gives us a snapshot of the real person alongside the literary scholar. Ruth Finnegan Anthropologist concludes with a comprehensive summary of her main publications with links to online references to her works. I suggest that readers look up Ruth Finnegan’s Facebook page to gain a further glimpse of the woman behind the words. I can highly recommend Ruth Finnegan Anthropologist to anyone who is interested in investigating further the works of one of the most open minded and inclusive writers of the modern era. I am sure that this story has not ended and that the best of Ruth Finnegan may be yet to come.
