Sarahbeth Persiani’s intimate and insightful memoir, Run, Walk, Crawl: A Caregiver Caught Between Generations, documents her experiences as a caregiver. At the same time, she also navigated motherhood and challenges in the workplace. In 2005, Persiani and her family moved to a town in central Massachusetts. The move brought them closer to family. Before her father’s condition deteriorated, she and her siblings were already caregivers to their parents. As his condition worsened, the responsibilities continued to mount. The memoir captures her everyday moments, including balancing family responsibilities, handling the demands of a carer, trying to understand her father’s changing condition, and helping him through it. It is a raw account of what many caregivers experience as they are thrust into this new role.
One of the aspects that I appreciated the most about Run, Walk, Crawl by Sarahbeth Persiani is that it documents Persiani's and her family’s experiences as caregivers without offering specific guidelines on how to handle a similar situation. Even though circumstances may be different, anyone who has stepped into a similar role will relate to the moments captured in the book. The memoir is also refreshing as it is open about the daily struggles caregivers face. It also contains many touching moments and some funny moments. There are many lessons within the memoir, and some that stand out include her father’s loving words. There are also many encouraging biblical scriptures included at every step of the journey. Run, Walk, Crawl is a powerful memoir that will resonate with many caregivers. It is a remarkable asset for anyone trying to understand the role and challenges faced by caregivers.
