Joanna Philbin's Rules of Summer is a story that could happen anywhere and her cast of characters might be found in your own community. Maybe. Rory McShane is given the opportunity to live with the very well-to-do Rule family in East Hampton. Her aunt has been their house-maid for years and through her, the unpaid position of errand girl is given to Rory. It is a huge contrast to her own home life with a single mother whose choices in men are about as good as the rest of her decisions. Rory is pulled into the lifestyle of the rich and becomes very close to the Rule's youngest daughter, Isabelle, whose choices are also just as bad as Rory's mom's (but in a more upscale way). The Rules are not perfect, as the girl soon learns, and by the time the summer is over, she will see deeply guarded secrets exposed, love lost, and love gained. She is naive when she gets there, but oh-so educated socially when she leaves.

Rules of Summer by Joanna Philbin is a great read. It is entrancing, funny, sad, and somewhat mystical as the threads to the Rule's tangled web unwind. I loved the audio book but envision kicking back with my toes in the sand from sun up to sunset. It's not a book you read now and then..nope. It's a cover to cover page-turner that you will be glad you found. I highly recommend this book for teenagers to adults.
