Royal Deception by Denae Christine is a young adult fantasy about characters who can change their body parts into weapons. Thirteen-year-old Prince Symon comes from a royal line of blade shifters, meaning he can shift his arms into swords. But when mermen kill his younger brother, his life changes. His parents are understandably overprotective. Nightmares foretell his death, too. And his kingdom is on the edge of a civil war. His uncle persecutes animal shifters but his tutor can shift his arms into wings. When Claur, a foreign rebel, targets Symon and Lana, his best friend, in an attempt to steal the throne, Symon isn't sure that his magic can save them. They must work together in order to save his kingdom. Symon must choose who he can trust, and who he should target with his sword arms.
Royal Deception is a fun, fantasy adventure full of action, lies, magic, and deception. Denae Christine did a nice job of creating memorable characters with really cool and unique features like changing their arms into swords and feathers. That was the coolest premise ever and I was so excited that the characters lived up to my expectations. They were well written in depth, and I enjoyed diving into this story and this magical world. It was very well described and the author was so descriptive that I felt like I was there and could easily see everything.
