Rory Aqua Adventure Man by Michelle Path is an intriguing story about a toy that comes to life. He is first found in the toy store, waiting to be taken home by a child. His story takes him on many adventures, including a couple of islands, learning many interesting things in the ocean and also making friends along the way, mostly friends anyway. The author provides quite a few details about each area and items involved there so the young reader has a good idea of what Rory may be dealing with. He learns a lot about different kinds of people and things, and finally does find his way back to land. There are teaching points in the book, such as kindness, forgiveness, caring for others and staying positive. There are many very good examples of all of these. Rory also is forced to problem solve along the way, and does so without much frustration. That is an invaluable example to children, and hard to come by. This is a book that will make you keep turning pages to see what Rory runs into next on his journey to find home again.
I enjoyed the thought process put into the story. I loved all of the details in each area he found himself in. I learned quite a bit about the areas and things involved in his situations, and I can imagine those details will make children want to research some of that further. The teaching points and problem solving examples make this a valuable book for children to consider reading. I found myself wanting to know more about the habits of the jungle animals, the daily lives of pirates and also the tendencies of an octopus. I really appreciated the few challenging moments where Rory had to get out of very sticky situations, using many different methods to do so. These are such awesome examples for children trying to figure out life and how to deal with daily struggles. I really enjoyed this book, and it kept my attention throughout. Overall, this is a very good book. It is a delight to read, and the few illustrations along the way help the young reader understand the story.
