Rock Step Triple Homicide by Doug Dorsey finds Detective Evann Myrick desperately seeking a break from solving mysteries. He and Victoria set out for an epic week on a dance cruise where they expect to see some sun, have fun, and enjoy dancing. He had hoped to avoid crime but just as he’s getting into the groove, he discovers that a killer may be on board. This pulls him into a mystery that has him investigating those around him, working to uncover their secrets, and wondering if any of them could be the killer. He hopes to wrap up the mystery and catch a killer before the cruise is over, and still have time to enjoy what remains of his vacation, all while learning how to dance.
The opening takes you directly into the mystery involving an encounter between two individuals. This sets up a killer, a death, and the beginning of a plan in the wake of an incident one of them witnessed. The cruise creates a backdrop for suspense as the killer lurks on board and could be anyone around Evann. The setting gives the mystery the feeling of a whodunit as Doug Dorsey takes advantage of the ambiance the ship provides. These elements make the tone light and give a carefree feeling to it despite the central mystery that includes a killer. It helps that dancing is a prominent theme throughout the story to provide charm, romance, and humor. Evann learning to dance creates amusing moments. Dancing remains in the picture, along with other cruise elements such as playing cards.
Evann’s one goal is to enjoy some peace away from solving crimes. His attitude is that of a no-nonsense crime-fighter and he has a feeling that he was born in the wrong period. These attributes make him appear akin to a hard-boiled detective. His relationship with Victoria allows for the mystery to lean toward romance and adds another layer to their dynamic. Other character perspectives are incorporated which pulls the mystery in different directions and provides fresh outlooks. Rock Step Triple Homicide blends a cruise setting, murder, and dancing for a charming, funny, and unusual mystery.
