Riley’s no ordinary cat. Well, perhaps he is, but this cat loves to have adventures, not just the chasing paper ball kind of adventure. But he also likes to sleep, and that’s what gets him into trouble in the first place. Only, he’s not really in trouble. What did he do? Well, he climbed into Dad’s open suitcase and snuggled amongst the packed clothes and then woke up later to discover that he was still in the suitcase, only it was closed and he was stuck and he was no longer at home. Riley was with Dad on a business trip. When discovered, he’s told to be good and stay in the hotel room. And, he was good. Well, sort of. You see, Riley was lounging on the balcony when Bagel, the seagull, perches on the railing and entices Riley to follow him on a day-trip adventure to see the sights. So that’s what they do. They even meet the wild ponies of Chincoteague and join them on the annual pony swim. What fun! You know what? I think Riley was meant to be an adventurous traveler.
Allison Wiest’s young people’s novel, Roaming Riley: A Delmarva Adventure, is a fun read about a cat named Riley. The plot follows Riley on his adventures in and around Ocean City. While he explores the many sites, he’s really sharing his adventures in a unique travelogue. He meets all kinds of animals and makes new friends, while enjoying some of the interesting sites and food, especially the French fries. This rollicking adventure will have young readers chuckling along and enjoying Riley’s fun, while at the same time learning something about the Eastern Shore of the United States. Included in Riley’s adventures are Chincoteague in Virginia and Lewes in Delaware as well as many interesting sites in between. The story is also about friendships and accepting each new friend as they are, even if they are different. This book is both fun and educational, with charming drawings of various sites and adventures that Riley shares with an unlikely seagull friend, Bagel.
