Rideshares, Wrecks, and Sex: Confessions of a Convicted Uber Driver by Joe F.N. Schmo is a non-fiction book in which an Uber driver talks about his most memorable experiences on the job. The book is an entertaining read and is basically a collection of the most outrageous, funny, or memorable incidents in Joe’s job as a driver for Uber driving in the Phoenix area in Arizona. The book is divided into short chapters, each dealing with an individual incident, that cover a wide range of topics such as drugs, sex and hookups, parties, breaking the law, and more. In all of these incidents, we meet a variety of people of all backgrounds and, in that sense, the book serves as a glimpse into the varied lives, motivations, and lifestyles of people from all walks of life.
This book is a fun read and, in general, tends to be a collection of stories about young people written by a young person. This is natural as driving for Uber usually requires tech-savviness and most of its users are the younger generation. This reflects in the stories as a lot of them involve alcohol, partying, drugs, sex, etc. Joe’s writing style is humorous, fast paced, and quite entertaining. He is also not afraid to express his personal opinions, which made it a refreshing read for me. This provides a genuine, candid look at the lives of young, ordinary people in today’s modern America and their typical urban lifestyles. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to other readers.
