Are you ready to make and eat a delicious and healthy homemade meal? Why not! All you really need to know is “Mmm! This tastes so very nice -/ Anything goes well with rice!” It makes for a very lyrical verse, one that you can sing to just about any tune. And, it’s true. Add some broccoli, some cheese, and whatever else you find in your kitchen, and cook up a fine casserole that will make you strong and certainly ease the hunger pains. Etaine Raphael and Susan Raymond’s Rice to the Rescue! shows the importance of healthy eating and how rice can help. Shawn and his twin sister, Nia, are energized by the healthy food they made and ate at school and now they’re full of creative energy, enough to write their own rhyming story all about a princess in the tower who needs to eat healthily. A story within a story – what a clever way to share the message about healthy eating.
Etaine Raphael and Susan Raymond’s picture book, Rice to the Rescue!, is beautifully illustrated by Andi Ketch. Told in rhyming verse, this lyrical tale will have young chefs eager to help in the kitchen, singing and dancing while they create healthy foods. The language is simple and the magical story within the story helps add another dimension to the plot. The book even includes recipes mentioned in the fairy story. There is also an activity book to accompany this one. Making the act of cooking fun, learning about good foods to eat, and actually making these foods is a great way to teach young readers the importance of eating healthily.
