Rexie Was Here: Buon Natale by Lisa Zupan, Dylan Alexander, and Giuseppe Musella is the story of a dog called Rexie who comes from Italy. Dylan, the boy he lives with, asks Rexie to tell him what Christmas is like in Italy. Rexie tells him about all their traditions and how they celebrate the holiday season. As Rexie tells Dylan, he shares a few words of Italian. Christmas traditions in Italy are slightly different from our traditions, but you can see a lot of similarities too. They decorate trees and get presents, but they have special treats that they eat during Christmas. Dylan is excited to hear Rexie's story but is worried that because he is in a different place now, Santa will not know where to find him. Rexie reassures Dylan that Santa will know where to go.
Lisa Zupan, Dylan Alexander, and Giuseppe Musella have written an entertaining and educational book with Rexie Was Here: Buon Natale. The illustrations are well drawn and colorful and kids will love them. The story is descriptive and it contains a nice message of how Christmas is about being together as a family, wherever you are in the world. I love the inclusion of Italian words so that children can learn as they read. It is a fun book and I think it would make a nice bedtime story for children during December. This book would also appeal to younger children in the 5-8 year age range. I would recommend it.
