Traveling can be fun, but it can also be a little scary, especially for the younger ones in the family. In Tuula Pere's Do You See Me When We Travel? a little boy voices his insecurities on a family road trip. From the standard, much-loved question, “Are we there yet?” to the expected “All I want is an ice cream!”, the plot follows the young boy and his family as they visit a museum, play in a park, eat strange food, and snuggle down for a long night’s sleep in a strange bed. All the boy really wants is to feel comfortable that his parents are still there for him and that things might seem different and scary, but they don’t have to be – they can also be fun and adventurous.

Do You See Me When We Travel? by Tuula Pere is a simple story about a family road trip. Packed full of all kinds of fun things to do and share, as well as the scary stuff that a strange place presents, the plot follows a young boy and his family who find their way through a big city where everyone and everything is different. The story is told mostly in dialogue, question and answer style with the little boy asking the questions and one of the parents responding. Who is speaking each time is color-coded so the reader won’t get confused. The illustrations by Majigsuren Enkhbat are unusual, but clever and certainly add another element to the story. A fun read – certainly something to take along on your next family trip to ease the burden of fear in young ones.
