Violet was a 10-year-old poor girl in 17th century London when an enigmatic and alluring vampire named Ewan used his power to enthrall her parents and convince them to sell her to him. He raised her as his daughter. When Ewan betrayed her and replaced her with a girl named Anastasia, Violet discovered that she was actually a descendant of the Celts, a powerful sorcerer – an Eylone. From that moment on, Violet vowed revenge against her former master. She’s now a vampire slayer, trained and mentored by Galvin, a powerful Eylone sorcerer.
Revenge (The Chronicles of the Eylones, Book One) is a romantic gothic story by Anna Santos. The setting spans from 17th century London and Paris to modern day Europe and USA. Violet is an interesting character and has the strong female lead traits that I like, although some of her decisions were questionable. Other characters are sufficiently well developed, including secondary characters; they contribute enough to the plot without being redundant. The prose is clear cut and the pace is appropriate. I’m impressed with the way the narrative is structured. It definitely gets your attention and makes you curious about Violet’s story.
Personally, I think this series might appeal to YA readers more, but there are enough twists, romance, intrigue and action all the way through the story to keep adult readers entertained. On the whole, Revenge is a solid read. Romance and gothic fans will find the premise and plot satisfying, and will be looking forward to its next installment.
