Revelations is a highly readable, frequently humorous story that is loaded with allusions to Greek mythology. As a fantasy, this story is first-rate and well-written. It carries its main character, Manny, who is lost, grieving the death of his wife, Sara, into acceptance of what life brings. Manny takes a trip to Greece, hoping to get beyond mourning his loss and meets the Abis and his dog, Rabbit. Abis leads Manny on wacky, often gross adventure after misadventure, but promises Manny that he will make him whole again. Abis is half con-artist, half philosopher and teaches Manny through their string of exploits that "Life has no meaning...it is an experience to be enjoyed, not looking backward."
This book is a fast paced look at how we should live our lives. Too often we become stagnant. We are afraid to take chances and do new things. After the death of his wife, Manny found it impossible to go on. He mourned but did not have closure. Abis helped Manny to live again, to find hope where there was none. While Abis was obnoxious, overbearing and deceitful, he was also just what Manny needed at that moment. Author Cohen has a gift for humorous writing.
