Requiem for a Lost Youth by Diana Hockley is a short story that starts off with someone receiving a couple of incriminating photographs along with a newspaper piece with the headline: “Murder in the Mountains.” Shocked and terrified because it had happened several years ago and thinking they had gotten away with it, this person instantly becomes sick and begins to worry about what this all means. This individual decides to call the former partner in crime to relay what had just happened. In a story full of suspense, intrigue, and twists and turns, you’ll never see the end coming.
I have read another short story by Diana Hockley, so when I saw Requiem for a Lost Youth, I just had to read it. What I like about short stories is a shocking ending, and once again, Hockley does not disappoint. Right off the bat, it looks like someone is being blackmailed. And you won’t understand the who, why, and how until the very end, which made this story so interesting. I didn’t want to put it down, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. Those last few words resulted in my jaw dropping. Not only was the plot amazing, but Hockley’s writing style is incredible. That is the reason I had to come back for more and why I will continue to come back for more of her stories. She is a truly talented writer. I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good short story with a surprising ending. The only complaint you’ll have is wanting more.
