Recurrence is a work of crime fiction by author Dave Norem, and is written for adults due to some graphic content. Unlike many other crime novels, this unique perspective on the narrative follows the criminal rather than the detective. Our antihero is a seasoned career criminal by the name of John Luther, whose double life posing between the mundane and the illicit seems to be causing a mental break in his psyche. He finds himself plagued by nightmares as his consciousness tries to reunite itself, particularly one recurring dream from which the novel takes its name. It is only in the isolated mountains of Virginia that John Luther finally finds what he’s been looking for, a revelation that shakes him to his core.
The plot of this novel is so interesting and thrilling that I want to be careful not to give details away! Author Dave Norem has created a fascinating lead in John Luther and, by allowing the reader to climb inside his mind, it becomes easy to see how criminals, particularly those who have no choice but to continue their life of crime, can become sympathetic characters in our eyes. Although the violent and sexual content of Recurrence is quite shocking, it is absolutely necessary in order to fully understand the impact that this life is having on John’s mind. Norem’s prose flows beautifully and it often feels like John is speaking directly to us through the lively and impactful dialogue. Overall, I’d certainly recommend Recurrence to crime fans looking for some innovative writing to get their teeth into.
