The fantasy genre is truly one of my favorites. And I’ve recently found that books written with a targeted audience of young adults are some of the best on the market right now. Add in a strong female protagonist, and you’ve got me hooked. And I certainly found all of these things to be true when I read Reborn, the first book in the Fate Challenges Series by author Cherie Reich. The story follows Yssa, the young woman destined to be the Phoenix Prophetess, who is sent at age seventeen to begin her training. Unable to forget a boy from home, Tym, and highly uninspired by the dusty tomes she must study every day, Yssa begins to believe that her fate is a curse instead of a blessing. When her parents die, she runs away until her true destiny calls her back, both for her own salvation and for the salvation of her entire world.
I thoroughly enjoyed Reborn, right from the start. The backstory of Yssa’s start as a stillborn baby, brought back to life by the god Apenth to fulfill her destiny to become the prophetess, was certainly an auspicious beginning. The story grabbed me from the beginning and kept a hold over me until the very end. Author Cherie Reich’s descriptive world crafting was superb, and I found myself completely absorbed in the world of Amora. I am very pleased to highly recommend Reborn, Book One of the Fate Challenges Series to any reader who loves fantasy, sci-fi, a little bit of romance, young adult fiction, or just good fiction in general. This book was a fantastic start to a new series, and I, for one, can’t wait to read the next installment.
