Rebels from Olympus (The Rebels Duet) by Sandy Milczarek is a fantasy story. Justus Appleyard is about to have his world turned upside down. His long-absent father is not the person Justus thought he was, and neither is his mother. Justus himself is not entirely human and is about to come up against an evil force that is darker than anything he has ever seen. His life is unraveling around him and his anger is growing. To cope with it, he starts drawing and comes up with a comic book series based on Captain Fortis, his hero, kitted out as a Roman soldier who takes on local villains without a thought. To fill the rest of his time, he starts building up his muscles by working out, learning all he can about the Roman and the Greek wars, and as much as he can about weapons through the ages. His mother is an environmental activist and ignores Justus in favor of her work and his sister. Then June enters the story, a giantess in more ways than one, with her daughter, Diana, and her son, Apollo. All of a sudden, things start to hot up as they are revealed for what they are – gods who are rebelling and on the run from Mount Olympus. Now there is a world to be saved from total destruction, giving Justus a focus in life.
Rebels from Olympus (The Rebels Duet) by Sandy Milczarek was an interesting read, something refreshingly different from the normal run-of-the-mill story. As well as being a fantastical story, it also contains lessons for just about everyone to relate to; real life lessons with a fantasy twist. It is a mix of the old mythological stories and modern life, a book that will keep any reader turning the pages in awe. It kept my attention all the way through and moves fast, a real mixture of action and humor designed to hold any reader and carry them along. The character development is done in such a way that you feel as though you know the characters well, as if they were your own next door neighbors. This has clearly been left open for another story. I hope that there will be a sequel in the near future – this is unfinished business.
