Rebecca’s Initiation (Redemption Book 1) by Gary Green tells a charming yet powerful story about a lonely girl who discovers the world of magic and danger. Twelve-year-old Rebecca lost her mother in a car crash. Having already lost her father, who was a soldier and died when she was a baby, Rebecca feels so lonely and numb. She has to move away from her friends and live with her grandmother Naomi, her only living relative whom she doesn’t know very well, on her farm in Minnesota.
Naomi worries about her gloomy granddaughter. She’s not doing well in school and hasn’t made any friends, so Naomi decides to tell Rebecca a secret about the day she met a dragon named Cedric. The dragon befriended Naomi, but had to hide magically in Naomi’s heart when people tried to kill him. From that moment on, Rebecca’s world fascinatingly changed. Rebecca’s Initiation gives essential life lessons and principles to young readers in the simplest way through the wonder of the magical world, magnificent ethereal beings such as dragons, gnomes, fairies, elves, talking trees, as well as the creepy ones such as the gremlins and trolls.
On the whole, this is an engaging and fast paced read that young readers can definitely enjoy with their parents or teachers, with a young central character whom they can easily connect with. The story line and the narrative development are solid. That said, my only criticism is the cover art which doesn’t do justice to the story.
