Rear Admiral Larry Chambers, USN: First African American to Command an Aircraft Carrier by Ric Murphy is the uplifting story of Rear Admiral Lawrence Chambers who was the captain of the USS Midway and the first African American to command an aircraft carrier in the United States Navy. This book covers Captain Larry Chambers’ tremendous courage and leadership, one of the unsung war heroes of the Vietnam War and the events surrounding the fall of Saigon. His temperament and insight to make the right judgment at the right time, and take the right decision during a time of humanitarian need, is what this book speaks about. It is about the integrity, humility, and temperament of a man who helped the United States Navy during a period of international turmoil and racism.
This biography traces the humble origins of Captain Larry Chambers on his journey to becoming a Rear Admiral and also includes personal interviews, research, and history that give readers an insight into the person, his pivotal role in the Vietnam War, and his rise to the highest levels of the United States Navy. It is also the story of a man who overcame the prejudices associated with colored skin which should have defined him as a second class citizen. The book is inspiring and encouraging to many as it reflects on an important point in American history and throws light on Chambers' childhood, growing up, and his journey that brought him to this point in life. The eleven-year war was costly for the United States, but gave the country a bold and compassionate human being who was comfortable in his own skin and broke all barriers by setting the bar high for those who came after him; black and white.
