Rascalville by Shalah Collins is the story of how a group of children cope with a terrible event. Jake is late meeting his friends in their treehouse in New York City. The temperatures are rising fast and they need to decide what they are going to do for the afternoon. When Jake finally arrives, it is clear that something dreadful has happened, something that Jake needs their help with, and fast. None of them has ever been through anything like it and hope that they never will again, but their friend needs them and they will drop everything to help him.
Rascalville by Shalah Collins is a very good book with a valuable lesson for all children to learn – how to cope with the death of a pet. This is something pretty much every child will have to deal with at some point, and the sooner they can learn how to cope, the better it is for them. I thought the illustrations were an excellent addition to the book as they brought the words to life, allowing children to see what is going on rather than just imagining it in their own minds. The story is short and to the point and it is all go, all the way through. I was a little put off by the picture of the animal (I won’t say any more because I don’t want to give too much away), but I didn’t think this was needed in such detail. However, I did enjoy the story and I think it is well aimed at its audience.
