Rapid Rodent Response: Ruff McPaw Mysteries Book 2 by Max Parrott is a light-pitched crime novel skillfully designed to thrill fans of detective stories featuring dog and human partners as sleuths. Ruff McPaw is a highly intelligent border collie known for his strong detective acumen. He lives with his faithful partner Angela Atkinson, a hobby sleuth-farmer-barista, on Angela’s farm in the quaint small town of Hummings Hollow. Driving to visit Angela’s parents, Angela and Ruff get stuck in traffic congestion near the town’s middle school. They find out that a school janitor was found dead in the supply closet. Much to the annoyance of Police Chief Helbar, Ruff and Angela start looking for clues to solve this crime. Will Ruff and Angela find the murderer?
Rapid Rodent Response by Max Parrott is a highly entertaining read with an intriguing plot and unusual clues. A talented sleuth, Ruff is also a great character judge - his assessment of Chief Helbar as “his personality smells like his shoes” speaks for itself. Angela’s animal-loving character is highly relatable too. The story’s eventful plot is perfectly balanced with a motley crew of characters. The novel also touches upon, in a mildly humorous way, the topical issues of juvenile delinquency when Angela with her friend David stop students from filling balloons with cherry syrup. The second in a series of six, this marvelous story stands perfectly well on its own, and I look forward to my reunion with Ruff in the remaining books of the series. Thank you, Max, for this thoroughly enjoyable read!
