Lorainna Merrick is on a trip of self-discovery in Sarah Westill’s novel Raiventon. She has been in a marriage contract with Master Guardian Raiventon for four years but has not spent any time with her husband. As the daughter of Arch Guardian Synintel, she must present herself as a person that society should revere. Lately, Shield Guardian Enbracken has taken a liking to her and her skill as a Logistics planner. The naive Raina assists Enbracken with several uncharted expedited shipping as he promises her that she will soon be out from under her father’s rule. Raina wants to be considered independent and despises that she has to follow her father’s rules. When Kevin Merrick returns from performing a mission that Synintel has sent him on, he discovers that his wife has been seen frequently in the company of Enbracken at social events and alone at his home. Kevin and Raina feel an automatic connection to one another, but whenever Raina gets close, her husband turns away. He has a secret that she is unaware of that could threaten her very existence.
Raiventon is the second book in the Gen Heirs: The Guardians of Sziveria series. Sarah Westill has penned a sequel capable of being a standalone novel. At no point was I ever confused about the ranking of the characters, the jobs each one of them performed, and their overall impact on the world around them. I found Raina’s naivety to be realistic and understood her confusion about Kevin’s actions. I thought that Enbracken was just as vile as the other characters, including Kevin, perceived him to be. The suspense, espionage, and intensity of the story kept me from putting this 5-star fantasy story down. While there are some explicit scenes, they are more from an emotional standpoint than detailed in the actual act itself. I did have to laugh when he teased the princess because she didn’t even know how to brush her hair. When the ultimate time came for Raina to make a life-altering decision, I anticipated the result it would have on Kevin, her father, and her overall high ranking in society. I look forward to reading future books in the series, and I will be looking up the first book. If you are looking for a story with a bit of romance told from the views of characters, Raiventon is one that you will want to pick up.
