Raising Boys and Other Animals is a humorous memoir by K.C. Rae, one that is filled with a collection of short stories detailing her experiences in raising three young boys. As each one prepares to leave the nest, she looks back on many of their antics with good humor and a lot of wit. This is a book that any mother of boys will find themselves relating to. The "other animals" detailed in the title are the many pets raised and laid to rest by Rae and her sons during their childhood, from the standard pets of cats and dogs to the more exotic ones like gerbils and ferrets. But never snakes, despite the fact that a few managed to get into the house to be studied by a young reptile enthusiast.
Through it all, Rae manages to craft a real winner in Raising Boys and Other Animals. I really enjoyed reading this book, and felt that each story did a good job of flowing into the next. While quite a few stories were hilarious, as a reader it was easy to see the love Rae felt for each son. This is a good book for almost anyone to read, especially those raising boys of their own and looking for a book to relate to. It's full of honest reactions, even if they aren't always the "correct" ones, along with solid advice and some comical moments. Raising Boys and Other Animals by K.C. Rae is a great book for anyone looking for a light and fun read.
